How to design a SEO strategy: 7 steps to position yourself on search engines

If you have a website, and you want to increase the traffic of visits, number of conversions and positioning over time, it is essential that you have a SEO strategy.

Through a good SEO strategy you can improve your positioning in the different search engines that exist, especially in the best known, Google.

What is a SEO strategy about?

If you are starting in SEO, it is important that you understand what it is, because no matter how many strategies you implement, if you do not understand what it means, you will not be able to do a good job of positioning.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is about the actions that we carry out if we are looking to position a web page in the first results of search engines.

The importance lies in the fact that websites that appear among the first results, generate a greater amount of traffic. According to statistics, the first 3 search results take between 50% and 80% of the existing traffic.

7 steps to create a good SEO strategy

Unlike a SEM strategy, where you can see results immediately, a SEO strategy requires time, consistency and persistence. Therefore, in this article, we will show you the necessary steps to create an effective strategy.

1. Create your buyer persona

To have a more accurate view of your target audience, it is important to develop your buyer persona. That is, the fictitious representation of your ideal customer.

In case you are wondering, how do you create a buyer persona? You can survey your target audience. The fundamental questions you can ask are:

  • Demographics. Country, name, age, gender, education, interests, work situation.
  • Short, medium and long term objectives.
  • What is their daily routine?
  • Media they usually use.

Creating a buyer persona is a crucial task in any good SEO or marketing strategy. However, many people do not give it the importance it deserves and end up implementing a series of actions without the right approach.

2.  Keyword research

The next step to develop your SEO strategy will be to analyze the searches that your buyer persona is performing and what are the best keywords to position your website.

For this task you can use tools like Google Trends, which allows you to see what people are searching for on Google.

And if you have a Google Adwords account, you can use the keyword planner. This is a free tool that allows you to find the words or phrases that users search the most.

To make this task easier, you can organize the keywords by categories, services, most searched for, highest value, etc.

Remember that these words should be used in your URLs, texts, categories, tags and meta descriptions. Likewise, you can include them in article topics for your blog.

3.  Analyze your competition

To develop your SEO strategy, it is important to know which companies have better positioning in the searches where you want to appear.

A very effective tool is Screaming Frog, with which you can find out what words your competitors use and what is their content structure.

Similarly, Semrush is another extremely useful tool, which in addition to analyzing the keywords of a website, also allows you to analyze SEM campaigns.

4.  Pay attention to your content

Search engines like Google are constantly changing. One of their objectives is to improve the results of search intentions.

Therefore, when writing content for your website, you must orient it towards the search intentions of your buyer persona.

And likewise, keep in mind that contents with more than 1000 words get better SEO results. But it is also essential to create valuable content that meets the user’s expectations.

5. Work on your images

Every part of your website should be SEO friendly, including the images. Therefore, you must take care of the name of your photos.

An example would be, if the image consists of a Miami landscape, the file name should be “miami-scape”. Google’s robot cannot analyze the image, so the idea is that it can know what the image is about through the title.

When you do not assign a name to your images, the robot analyzes it as an empty space, which affects the positioning.

Another relevant factor is the weight of the image, this depends on the loading time. The faster a website is, the lower the bounce rate (users do not want to spend several minutes waiting for a page to load).

The recommended weight is no more than 1 GB of images per page. And likewise, it is important not to forget the alt text, that is, the descriptive text of the image, which should include keywords for positioning.

6. Fix your site’s problems

To improve the positioning of your website, it is essential to solve all the problems found on it. From broken links, indexing problems and others.

To determine these, you must perform an SEO audit of your site. Nowadays, thanks to tools like Semrush, it is extremely simple.

Once you have your list of issues, we recommend working on them for at least 20 minutes every day. This way you will see how your website traffic starts to increase.

7. Analyze your SEO strategy

The best place to get this information is through Google Search Console, a free and very effective tool to analyze, optimize and see the status of your website in search engines.

With Google Search Console, you will be able to find a list of the issues that Google finds when it reads your site’s information. Also, for a more complete monitoring, don’t forget to insert the Google Analytics code in your web page.

With Google Analytics, unlike the search console, you will be able to study the traffic generated on your site. From seeing information about your visitors, to knowing the path they take on your site.

Plus: pay attention to details

The easiest way to make Google love your website is to pay attention to SEO details. Through the details, little by little you will be able to “score” points with the search engine.

The main details to consider are:

  • Meta description. This is the text that appears in the search results (SERP). The meta description does not affect your positioning directly, but it is a factor that influences the number of visits your site gets.

When you write your meta descriptions, they should include keywords and briefly talk about the subject of your web page, in a way that is attractive to the user.

  • URLs. Be sure to customize each of your links. For example, if your page or post is about improving SEO, a custom link would be:

www.websitename.com/improve-your-seo-positioning.

  • Add your favicon. The “favorite icon” is the small image that appears in the address bar of your page. This should be your company logo with a size of 14px by 14px.

SEO requires time

A good SEO strategy requires a lot of time, persistence and dedication. You can’t expect to get great results, if you don’t invest the time it takes.

In addition, search engines are constantly changing, so it is important to study new SEO updates on a daily basis.
